We're Infecting the Education and Health Systems with Hope!
William J. Harvey
This section of our website is devoted to parents, guardians and healthcare professionals to provide user-friendly information about the various types of teaching and research activities that our group takes part in.
Our main teaching focus happens through our Play-To-Learn (PTL) service-learning project. PTL is a unique partnership that our lab has created between the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education of McGill University and the ADHD clinic of the DMHUI. It is a FREE service for families of patients from the ADHD clinic at the DMHUI.
Here is how it works ...
Third and fourth year Physical and Health Undergraduate students from McGill University participate in a 10-week course at the CHAMPS physical activity lab. They learn how to teach social skills and physical activities to children with ADHD through physical education instruction. Dr. Harvey and his graduate students volunteer to supervise these students during (a) 2-weeks of intensive training lectures in research and practice to all undergraduate students and (b) 8-weeks of 2 hour physical education / student-led instructional periods. The McGill students learn all about our physical activity research for children with ADHD as well as classroom strategies for dealing with children with behavioural problems. Essentially, we are providing positive behaviour management training for these new teachers-to-be!
During the same 2-hour time period, parents of children with ADHD participate in an 8-week psychoeducation group with our colleagues from the ADHD clinic (e.g., nurse, social worker, etc.). They learn all about ADHD and they are encouraged by the clinical staff to take an active approach to raising and guiding their child with ADHD.
Our group also places a high priority on current and future Physical and Health Educators of today and tomorrow by assisting with the annual conference for the Association of Physical Educators of Quebec.
